Are you sure about this? I just sent them one of my backpacks for a warranty repair about 3 weeks ago. It came back a few days ago repaired. I also called their customer service number and someone was there to take the call. As far as I can tell they are still in business. What would be great is the Quest Cantina (retalis for ~$90). It is a conecting unit between two other Quest tents. Unfortunately Quest is out of business, so good luck. If you would like me to email you a pic let me know. | _D_A_|/_I_D_

Paul again. Is this model a free standing tent or does is require pegs at each end to keep it up? The ones that are not freestanding are lighter and less expensive because they have less poles, but they can tend to sag in the middle with changes in humidity and if the end pegs are set in less than perfect ground(ie,the pegs will pull out easily in rock, sand, gravel, snow etc). I would recommend a free standing tent for these reasons. Also, a free-standing tent is easy to move around once it is set up. paul

I am trying to decide between Marmot’s Screech and Swallow. both have the same floor and vestibule area and design. The only difference I see is that the screech has more mesh in the canopy whle the swallow lets you zip its less ammount of webbing shut. My question is: What makes the swallow a convertible tent and the screech a 3S tent? Both use the same pole system, so stability cant be different between them. Why would you want to zip shut mesh? is the zipped-shut mesh stronger than open mesh in high winds? I’ll do alot of three season backpacking but colder trips each winter. do both have the Bare Bones option? What are peoples’ feelings about this feature? thanks alot! Tom Bowler
Response:
The zip-up mesh conserves heat much better than an open mesh ceiling. As long as you leave it unzipped enough for ventilation when it’s really cold you won’t have too much condensation build up. Being able to close up the mesh really makes a lot of difference when it’s cold out. Dave Washington

I read the post about the cold weather with mesh, true. Another thing that people don’t often realize is that, when you camp in the desert, the last thing you want is open mesh. If you’re in Canyonlands, or any desert area like that with lots of loose sand, have open mesh, go for a hike on a windy day, the tent will have gritty sand all over the inside of it, it blows over the body, under the fly, through the mesh. In the desert, mesh is not your friend. *G* Joe Teacher, Kalispell, Mt Why would you want to zip shut mesh? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

What is the difference b/w open mesh and closed mesh? Not utility, but looks or may it is made.
