The Best GPS
Question:
Hi, I would like to buy an GPS. But what’s the best ? I am a hiker in intermediate desolate areas and I think a intermediate high tec GPS is enough for me. I am looking forward to your responses…. Alrik

Check out sci.geo.satellite-nav; it’s the newsgroup with the most info and help on this topic. I have a Garmin GPS 12 XL and recommend it highly. It doesn’t have internal maps or charts, like some units, but I find those less than helpful in the backcountry. Garmin’s support of the units is exceptional, and they find and hold signals well. About $250 US. Good luck.

The Garmin 12XL is about the best value and performance. There is a 12 model (no XL) that has a few less features like external antenna port and audio alarms but otherwise uses the same interface and has identical performance- it costs about $80 less than the 12XL. I have owned both Magellan and Garmin units and have concluded that Garmin is the better choice. — Dale – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi, >I would like to buy an GPS. why not a map and compass, the way that camping was meant to be done in the first place. I highly recommend you try it. Later…… james d

What???? And let all the taxpayer moola go to waste??? I think you fear technology!!! KElly
Response:
Yes, and why use backpacks? Or boots? Or clothes? We don’t need all of this technical wizardry! Seriously, a GPS is a useful tool and help you plan and execute a trip with less time, greater accuracy and more safety. It is important that you have good map and compass skills to fall back on as a GPS can still go wrong. I use a Garvin GPS II (and a Silva Compass!), it can have horizontal or vertical orientation. I mount it on the handlebars of my mountain bike when I am not walking. > why not a map and compass, the way that camping was meant to be done in > the first place. I highly recommend you try it.
