Who's cheapest? SFO to London

Question:

> I would check Virgin Atlantic from LAX and checking into cheap travel > down there (Southwest or other airlines) or the train..

Although Southwest is cheap, in general, it’s not a great idea to fly Southwest to connecting flights.  The reason is that they do not have agreements with other airlines.  So if your Southwest flight is cancelled (for whatever reason) and you miss your connection, you are out of luck (kiss those APEX fare nonrefundable tickts goodbye).  This happened to me.   I had free tickets on TWA to Hawaii from LAX for two.  So I booked Southwest from Pheonix to LAX (to take advantage of the companion fare) and gave myself a 3-hour layover in LAX (just in case the Southwest plane was late).   Not only did Southwest cancel our flight, but they gave priority on subsequent flights to people who had tickets for those flights (i.e., we didn’t get guaranteed seats on the next flight!).   The next two flights were fully booked so I had to buy two last minute tickets on America West at $150 a head from Pheonix to LA.  Now is where it gets really interesting.  I tried to get my baggage from Southwest to transfer to the America West flight, but Southwest said they had already sent them to LAX (I arrived at Pheonix airport two hours early just to be safe there and they said they sent my luggage right awary).   I assume this is a massive violation of federal flight law, e.g., you should always fly with your baggage, but what am I to do?  So I fly to LAX and go to the Southwest baggage handlers.  Lo and behold my luggage is not there, it is still in Pheonix!  So I have to wait around for my luggage to show up at Southwest.  Meanwhile my girlfriend checks in over at TWA.  I want my luggage (two backpacks) because I’m planning on camping when we get to Hawaii and I need my tent etc.  Southwest said they would send it to me, but when and I’m going to be on the Big Island in Volcano National Park backcountry?  Anyways, my luggage finally shows up and I have two minutes to get to my TWA flight.  So I jog from the Southwest terminal to the TWA terminal with two backpacks (there was quite a queue for Taxis and no bus in sight).  I managed to get there just in time (somehow my bags made the flight), but I was totally stressed, sweating like a pig, and out $300 (I’m a starving student type). Not a fun way to start a vacation.  So Southwest is cheap, but there is a non-advertised element of risk involved. Curtis Dyreson
