Auckland airport – immigration counter
Question:
It seems to take a considerable amount of time getting in/going out of Auckland NZ. I dont know if it has to do with the lack of manpower but it takes a good 30 minutes going through immigration. Make sure you take that into account when boarding your flight!! You need to pay NZ$20 airport tax. That’s everyone.

yes indeed; the only connection on our recent RTW trip was at Auckland and we missed the onward Christchurch flight because of huge queue at immigration. Fortunately Qantas changed us on to a later one with no hassle and no charge. Leave at least two hours between landing and takeoff. (The line from the airport staff was ‘lots of planes have landed at once’ – this appeared to have surprised them!) NZ biosecurity is strict and they will want to disinfect hiking and camping equipment, so don’t bury your boots at the bottom of your rucksack. They come back about 10 mins later a bit damp and smelling of disinfectant, although bizarrely still with bits of mud on.. We also got x-rayed again on landing, so consider any films that you are carrying and how many x-rays they’ve been through, you may want to buy them in NZ or get them developed before arrival. There is no option on x-rays for 400ASA or below. NZ exit procedures aren’t totally obvious; at some stage before you go through to departures, go to the kiosk and pay your $20 per person departure fee, they take cash or credit cards. This will get you a sticker which control needs to see. You also need to fill in a departure card, there aren’t any signs to tell you to do this so we didn’t find out until we got turned back at passport control. (There was a pile of cards nearby). notwithstanding all this and this summer’s terrible weather, NZ is a great place and we can’t wait to go back. I read up on this before I went and made sure my boots were clean as a whistle. Gave them a new coat of dubbin and wrapped them up in a bag to protect my other clothes from the gunk. They were spotted on the x-ray and I had to haul them out to be examined. Fair enough.

If you want to prevent this scenario, then *wear* yoor boots. While not in NZ, but in Oz, we had the exact same experience. We were wearing our Teva’s, but had to show and clean (ourselves!) our ‘hiking’ boots which were in our luggage. All other people who were *wearing* similar boots, could go straight through. I think the rationale is that if you wear them, any (possibly contaminated) dirt from farms, etc. has already been worn (sp?) off, while if you carry them, it may still be on them. Sadly my wife was not allowed to take a picture of me scrubbing our boots at Darwin airport at 04:30 AM after some 30 hours of travel!
