How You can Camp for $6.00
Question:
<snip, slash, cut, rip> I just go. If you have to spend all that time keeping track of things, you must devote time to it. That takes away from my time in the woods. I leave all that shit at home. It costs what it costs, and I don’t care what that is. Of course, I do watch prices and try not to spend money frivolously and unnecessarily. Other than that, I don’t give one airborne potato. well, you get the idea. Steve
Response:
Lessee… Camping on crown land: fee = $0.00 Food = as much or as little as you want, really. For one day, one can of beans, $1; some trail mix, $4; some bread, $1; some chicken, $4; maybe some coffee for the morning, $0.50. Well … more or less the same that I would spend for eating at home. Gasoline from Toronto to good crown land and back: $20.00 PK
Response:
I agree completely with what you are saying here. I go to camp, to get away from the worries of the week, and year. It’s time to relax. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > <snip, slash, cut, rip> > I just go. If you have to spend all that time keeping track of things, you > must devote time to it. Mine, in Canadian dollars: Camp Fee: $50 for the weekend Gasoline: Depends where I go. Ottawa, for instance, was $30. Naptha: About $2 worth per weekend. Fire Wood: $10 Groceries: $10 (canned food and oatmeal — probably this would be more if I ate real food instead) So all in all, not too bad. Of course, I’m new, so I’m still actively buying equipment, and theoretically I should ammortize the cost of the equipment over a number of trips. What do I have for equipment? Tent: $200 Lantern: $70 Stove: $70 Kitchen Tarp Setup: $15 Air Mattress: $40 Other Miscellaneous Crap: $100 at least. — - awh http://www.awh.org/

Gas for however far is extra. Costs nothing to toss in the canoe or kayak and start upstream. Deviled ham and crackers for lunch costs same as at home. Can of soup for dinner costs less than dinner at home. Gas for camp stove is negligible. Car camping is more. $7 to $ 14 US a night. I eat better too. Ice for cooler $2, hot dogs $2.29. Buns $1.89 (some are taken home later, so it’s not all camp cost.) Onion $1. Can of soup for second day lunch or dinner and Granola bars for breakfast brought from home. Firewood, if gathering is not allowed $10. Oops. 1/4 of one pint of Jack Daniels about $ 4 or $5? (unlikely I’d drink that much JD when not camping.) So an extra $30 to $50 for me to do two or three days camping car camping, not much more than gas cost for me to do canoe or kayak camping. — rbc: Vixen Mostly Harmless. http://www.visi.com/~cyli

Another way to look at it is to only include the ADDED expenses of camping. If you stayed home, you would still have food expenses, possibly higher if you went out to a restaurant rather than cooking yourself. You might still have the same expenses for liquid refreshments, again possibly higher if you went to a bar instead of your fridge. If you stayed home and went to a movie instead of fishing and having a campfire; well at $9.00 per person and $6 for a soda and popcorn, well you get my point. Your utility expenses at home would be higher if you are there, which offsets some of the site fees. Once the equipment is paid off, camping ends up being a very inexpensive way to spend your time. Let’s see, a couple gallons of gas in the bike: $3.50 I had all the gear. The site was free. The time was great! Oh.. Food/drinks: $2.50 Guess that’s the $6 he’s talking about and I didn’t have to spend a time to get a book to tell me that!
