car racks

Question:

I have a Yakima rack (SST w/Y clips) on my ‘90 4-Runner, and I love it.  I carry bikes, sea kayaks, and a basket case.  It fits well, and hasn’t harmed the car finish.  It was rather noisy when the sunroof was open, but I added the wind fairing, and that took care of it. I have friends with Thules, and I personally don’t like them as much.  I think they are harder to adjust, and I’m not wild about the attachments… –Fred C.

Response:

I’m looking at buying, in the very near future, a new roof rack for my ‘91 4 Runner.  I’m currently considering saris, Thule and Yakima.  Has anyone had experiences (good or bad) with their racks?  I’ll be using the rack for a variety of equipment, including skis, bikes, canoe, kayak and luggage.  Also, if anyone has some general tips on what to look for in a rack, I’d be greatful for any advice.  E-mail me at chris

I, too have and am pleased with a Yakima.  I didn’t choose their RailRider mounts (which fit into stock roofrack rails), but opted for the higher-rated gutter clamps.  I carry a canoe mostly, but have also used it for lumber, and I have a super-heavy-duty steel basket I made myself – with this, the Yakima setup has carried 200 pounds (water, spare tires, fuel, winch, jack, shovels, etc.)!  Vehicle is a ‘92 Loyale used extensively offroad.         For "normal" usage, I think you’re looking at a choice between two excellent products – likely either would be very serviceable. My tips are to (1) consider which will fit best on your car and (2) consider which is more widely supported (replacement parts, new attachments, etc.) in your local area. —

Don’t know that retailer, but Yakima and Thule make the most versatile multisport racks. There are other brands, and many different dealers. The cargo baskets with lashing straps or elastic net could be really helpful for assorted car camping gear (at least stuff that can take weather). See: www.yakima.com www.thule.com Look at their fit lists, and what limits there are for weight, and for length of boats, etc. Nice thing about them is that they fit many different cars, so the rack system you buy now could likely transfer to your next vehicle with minor changes. Neither system fits all cars, with differing gaps. Happy trails, Gary (net.yogi.bear) at the 51st percentile of ursine intelligence Gary D. I would wait until they start responding to attempted contact. Their toll-free and regular numbers are bad, they don’t answer emails. I have a standing order that I can’t get any info on. bs "David Speers" – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> . . .  Looked at outbackgear.com.  Does anybody know anything about > this outfit?

Based on my experience with them, I’ll never use them again. I ordered a jacket on March 19th & still haven’t received it. Unfortunately they never sent a tracking number with the transaction, so UPS won’t release any info for me. I’ve emailed them over a dozen times & only received one response last Monday when I got really nasty with them. Even then,  the problem wasn’t resolved within the past 4 days-I’m still waiting for a response. There’s a new number posted on their website, but it’s directing all calls to a full mailbox. If you want to try it, it’s 330-538-9850, but I’d advise you to shop elsewhere. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I would wait until they start responding to attempted contact.
