My Small Adventure….and a lesson
Question:
Here’s a bit about an adventure I had last Friday…and the lesson learned from it. I had a gig this past Friday night….so I’m doing the usual stuff…changing strings, polishing my guitars, etc. I’ve noticed that I’m getting a little scratchy noise from my 25 year old Gibson Flying V. I figure that there’s a little crud buit up on the 1/4" jack contacts. So, I get my trusty can of Caig cleaner, squirt a bit in and insert a cord to clean it up. Only…..the cord goes in…and back out *way* too easy. Ohhh……NOOOO. The jack is broken. After 25 years, it was finished. Let’s see….how long until I have to leave for the gig? An hour??? Yikes…… On the way to my little work shop, I’m thinking…..geez, do I even have a 1/4" jack? I’d better….no place to get one at this hour! Well, luck was with me, as I had 2…and one was a good quality jack that will do the job for years to come. I made it….barely. Replacing the jack on a Flying V requires removing the bridge, pickguard, etc. It’s not a difficult job, but a bit time consuming. When you put it back together, you have to adjust the action, intonation, etc. As I thought about it…..what if I had not had a replacement part? Those are piddly cheap little parts, but how many of us have a spare lying around…just in case? I routinely keep spare plugs (1/4", XLR, etc.), but from now on, I’ll make sure I have a couple of *good* quality jacks of all types I use….because you never know, eh? It would have sucked to not be able to use my favorite guitar, all because I didn’t have a 3 dollar part. And more, I’d say it’s a safe bet that most all of our amps use 1/4" input jacks. (some of you may need a chassis mount jack for that, and thus, may not wish to attempt that one.) I suppose my lesson learned is this: Keep a spare *everything*, regardless of how cheap it is, if it will keep you from playing, should it fail. OK, so that’s not really practical….but….I keep spare tubes, speakers, amps, cords, strings, straps, stands, mics, connectors, plugs……and now, 1/4" jacks…several! Anyone else have some piddly cheap little part prevent or almost prevent their using a prized piece of gear? Granted, my experience was really more of a "scare", but seriously….I didn’t know if I had a spare, until I found one. In the meantime, I was sweating!! Tell us about your adventures, so we may all learn! Thanks, Mike P.

String pegs in the case/bag of each guitar that needs them. Allen wrenches in the case/bag of each guitar, screwdriver , etc. Never know when your toolbag might get left in a hurry. You can never have too many spares. And the folks you gig with might not be so smart. At least until they need some part they thought would never break.

I usually have the opposite problem. I’ve collected enough guitars and amps that some of them sit around unused for a while before I get around to using them. If I had a guitar or amp go down while I was at home I’d just grab something else and consider it an opportunity to bring another player in off the bench. Of course having spare gear at home wouldn’t help me much if something broke while I was at a show. So your point is still well taken. I did recently have a show that I’d decided was definitely a job for a Tele (don’t remember why). My Mexi Tele was at the rehearsal space. I got my Shecter Tele and gave it a once over and remembered that the nut on the input jack was on wrong. It had come loose once and I finger tightened it back in a hurry and at the wrong angle, so it wasn’t all the way on. By the time I got it off to put it on correctly I found that it had somehow gotten stripped. I didn’t have enough time to replace it before I had to leave, and started cursing myself for having messed with it in the first place. Fortunately at the last minute I managed to get it past the stripped section and threaded on correctly. I should think twice before I attempt any last minute repairs that might render a piece of gear worse off than before I started. -Scott

Maybe not quite the same, but… A long time ago I learned (the hard way) that a tech always needs *two* multimeters (on an in-the-field job site); dang if I didn’t have one go ‘partially wrong’ once (readings inaccurate, intermittent) without a backup; cost me 2+ hours of wasted, non-billed time (I thought things weren’t quite right, but trusted my meter… I mean, the batteries in it were good!) And how are you going to fix the *first* meter if you don’t have a *second* one??? (one step further, the same for oscilloscopes too…) -Robert "Every vehicle he drives sports its’ own digital multimeter!" (been carrying the required bag of assorted fuses for years)

Well, it’s not exactly cheap, but I had my ADA MC-1 midi pedal go down…no patch changes for my rack rig! If there was ever a weak link in the chain! I bought another one from Ebay, and have yet to get the first one repaired…shame on me! Come to think of it, I should get a backup 7-pin cable, too. I have my SansAmp, Tri-A.C., and Legend amp and cab at my gigs, so I still have a rig if any part of the rack goes down…but man, am I spoiled by midi and phantom power! ~Rich See my gear at the link! http://community.webtv.net/one4rich/RichsGuitarPage

I have alot of guitars but ususally use the same gig-bag for whatever two I decide to take for said gig. It’s a reunion blues double, holds two axes, anyway I always have the zippered pouch on the front full of "gign’ tools", strings, winder, cleaning stuff, must add 5 or 6 pounds to the bag!

Wow, Mike — that’s the first time I’ve heard of a 1/4" jack failing outright. Was it a typical American jack (e.g. Switchcraft model 11) or an Asian imitation? My experience is that some of the Asian jacks will lose contact tension from time to time — you can just bend the tip contact a little (you can do that with a little screwdriver, right through the hole without removing the jack) and it’ll be years before that problem recurs, though. Did the tip contact actually break off on yours? Hello Mike, It may beg the question, but why not have a good second guitar as a back-up to your fav "V"? That way if you have a problem you’ve got a back-up guitar and don’t have to sweat the time just prior to the gig. That 45 minutes before the start of the first set is when I’m sitting at a table off the stage, getting limbered up and doing scales, modes, finger and hand stretching exercises, and getting into the vibe of the room. You may already have a second (or third) guitar, but as I didn’t see it mentioned, I thought it beneficial to point out to the reader that if a guy is gigging, a second guitar really makes sense from so many angles. I own a Les Paul Classic, a Strat and a Tele, and often take all three to the gig – not only do I have great back-ups, I "want" to play them and usually work all three into the evening. For most gigs I’ll take two amps; not only do I like the sound and feel of a multi-amp rig, if a problem arises with one amp I have my back-up already on-line and ready to go. I’m an Eagle Scout with a history of camping, so I’ve made mental and physical lists for a long time of what I need to accomplish a task or goal. For a gig I take along a kit box that has spare fuses, instrument and speaker cords, tubes, spare overdrive pedal, tools, cloth and paper towels, duct tape, 9 volt batteries, etc. Each of my guitars usually have a minimum of two extra sets of strings in the case, along with simple but effective ear plugs for hearing protection if I need `em. And plenty of guitar picks. The vote for "Best money spent for gear" would go to strap locks. All it takes is one time for that strap to come off your fav guitar and you’re a believer. All the best. Walk in Beauty, Peace. Scott

Hmmm.. My V has a small, round plate that the jack is attached to. I had assumed I could just unscrew that plate. Is your V different?

Couldn’t you use the oscilloscope to fix the meter? My favorite gig story: Years back when we didn’t HAVE spare gear, we were way outstate at a little high school and one of our microphones broke. I did have a little screwdriver and found a small broken wire inside – but we didn’t carry soldering irons or any of that stuff. So, I had the janitor let me into the metal shop and looked around on the floor. Soon found a splash of solder under a bench! Got a nail from the janitor and whacked it into a little piece of wood. Held matches under it to heat it up, and soldered the wire back together.
Shoulda called ourselves the McGuyvers, I guess.

Don’t eat beans before a gig if you’re micing your speaker cab.

"Micing," by all applicable rules for English pronunciation, must rhyme with "icing." When you shorten the name "Michael" to "Mike," a change in form is required. This ain’t rocket science. "Mic" and "micing" simply make the user look ignorant, regardless of any "insider" status the use of such (fractured) jargon may confer. Please. Lord Valve Expert

Was this really worth posting? A post made just to heartlessly and pointlessly insult someone who never did anything to you? What ever happened to "Though shalt not judge"? Aren’t you the guy who was posting about Jesus and about being a Christian? … pointlessly attacking a poster in a forum that is intended for fun and enjoyment? I know you will say I’m judging you, but honestly, I am just REALLY curious how you answer this question. Because if you are always mentioning that you are a Christian here and then at the same time being judgmental and hateful to people without cause, I am offended and do not appreciate your false advertising giving the religion of love a bad name. You know, non-Christians judge Christianity by the actions of those who say they are. Something George Bush and most politicians have never read: " The commandments… are summed up in the one command, ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself’. If you love someone you will never do him wrong; to love, then, is to obey the whole Law" – Romans 13:9-12 just REALLY curious…. StratMatt

Just yesterday I decided to check this group out again because I figured the political people should be finished with their posts that ruin the group since the elections are over… A few of the first things I have seen were LV telling a guy that "he is lucky that Jesus loves assholes too" etc…. and then I think he went on to say something else regarding what he thinks Jesus thinks. Then today I was genuinely appalled by his post which served absolutely no purpose other than to make someone look/feel like an idiot for misspelling something. It came across as very condescending, judgemental and mean spirited. Based on the previously mentioned post of his I ASSumed that he maintains that he is a Christian so I was simply confused because it made no sense- it didn’t add up. So I posted to see if he could make sense of it for me. The "witnessing" was just a Bible verse for any Christian who voted for Bush because they were under the false assumption that his actions are the actions of a Christian. Just as the quality of tree is known by the fruit it produces, the qulaity of a person is made known by their actions. … so I guess that makes two of us "wondering" around here, huh? StratMatt

ROFLMBFAO! Holy shit, what a crackpot! > I know you will say I’m judging you, but honestly, I am just REALLY curious > how you answer this question.
I don’t give a shit if you judge me or not. How can it possibly matter? > Because if you are always mentioning that you are a Christian here
No, I’m not. In fact, I’m on record as saying I’m an agnostic. WTF are you getting this shit from? > and then > at the same time being judgmental and hateful to people without cause, I am > offended
That’s tough shit, son. BE offended. Who cares? Not me. > and do not appreciate your false advertising giving the religion of > love a bad name.

Clearly it is my mistake. I saw a post of yours where you mentioned Jesus and I mistakenly made an assumption. I apologize. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> … pointlessly attacking a poster in a forum that is intended for fun and > enjoyment? > ROFLMBFAO! I should have bit my tongue and waited to see what you are on record as saying! :) Because I had only seen two days of posting. Actually, because you were so gung-ho about Bush back during the election I also stupidly ASSumed that you were one of those "hard-core right wing Christians". Obviously I was wrong! :) > and then > at the same time being judgmental and hateful to people without cause, I am > offended > That’s tough shit, son. BE offended. Who cares? Not me.
I wasn’t really genuinely offended- that is the word that happened to come out at the time. :) > and do not appreciate your false advertising giving the religion of > love a bad name. > You know, non-Christians judge Christianity by the actions of those who say > they are. > If you can show me where I said I was, I’ll retract whatever it is you feel I > should retract.
I can’t – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Something George Bush and most politicians have never read: > " The commandments… are summed up in the one command, ‘Love your neighbor > as you love yourself’. So this is why it is written " Though shall not judge"…. because now I am the idiot (because I jumped to conclusions)! Funny how that book is always right! " Official retraction" StratMatt
