'swiss army' 18'x16' cabin dome tent – I think by Wenger?

Question:

> You may think you are saving a few bucks, but in many cases, you are buying > a piece of crap that is targeted to the masses buying on credit and someone > is lining their pockets.  It may not be your snowshoe, kayak or deck > chiminiea that fails, but odds are pretty damn high someone’s will sooner > than if they had a solid piece of gear. > I also think you are answering your own questions.  BTW – If you really want > to save money on a cheap tent, why blow $150 at BJ’s (or whatever) when you > can get an equally comparable piece of crap tent on Ebay for much less > Rick

I think what "Rick" is trying to say is be very careful.  You might pick up a real bargain or it might just be cheap.  Example: I am a scout leader and see lots of equipment come and go.  The cheap stuff is usually ok for a couple of trips but soon falls apart (cheap materials and/or shoddy workmanship.  On the other hand, a recent camp out had us on a bald hill and that night we got 35-40 mph winds one Ozark Trails (Wal-Mart) tent stood up to it fine while a Kealty right next to it and pretty much the same style was flattened.  Both tents were properly set up and checked by me and the Kealty was even given extra guying when it began showing distress.  So don’t overlook the bargains but you usually DO get what you pay for. I disagree – I do think categorizing based on gear being sold at warehouse clubs says a lot.  If I see someone snowshoeing up a NE mountain in a pair of Yukon Charlie’s, I am probably going to be a little concerned about them and their safety and their preparedness .  If I see someone paddling across a large bay in one of those $200 Kayaks sold at BJ’s, then I am going to be concerned about their safety and ability to keep that thing going straight. You may think you are saving a few bucks, but in many cases, you are buying a piece of crap that is targeted to the masses buying on credit and someone is lining their pockets.  It may not be your snowshoe, kayak or deck chiminiea that fails, but odds are pretty damn high someone’s will sooner than if they had a solid piece of gear. I also think you are answering your own questions.  BTW – If you really want to save money on a cheap tent, why blow $150 at BJ’s (or whatever) when you can get an equally comparable piece of crap tent on Ebay for much less Rick

If Its Ex Army it will be of fairly good quality as it will have had to stand up to heavy usage. if you can look them over before parting with hard earned cash all the better. I have used ex forces gear for years and i am still using ex SAS 120ltr bergen on my long trips. Neil a young 64

I don’t think it’s any sort of military surplus, seems more like a consumer tent, multiple doors and 2 vestibules… — DoD #2223

They’ve got a smaller coleman there as well, price is about what they’re going for.  My parents camped with us for 20years with a coleman tent, it was made well. Are they junk these days as well?  Noticed they’re made in Taiwan/China/other.. I suspect my dads 20 (30 probably) year old tent was made in the U.S.. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > My advice is to steer clear of anything those club stores/ Wal-mart > /K-mart etc..offer. > think not. > The saying   "you get what you pay for"  certainly rings true when buying > tents. > Really,  If I were you, I’d spend a little time searching aroung in > reputable camp stores before throwing your money away. > I got burned like that several years ago. And it just occurred to me, I picked up an off brand dome tent (7′x7′) from Costco about 8 years ago for about $50.  It’s survived about 20+ camping trips (some long some short) in rain, snow (one crazy California high-desert year).  Held up like a champ. I don’t think categorizing based on where they are being sold says much.   Most of what I see are models that aren’t being sold by the manufacturer anymore.  Don’t see any reason to not save a few bucks. My advice is to steer clear of anything those club stores/ Wal-mart /K-mart etc..offer. think not. The saying   "you get what you pay for"  certainly rings true when buying tents. Really,  If I were you, I’d spend a little time searching aroung in reputable camp stores before throwing your money away. I got burned like that several years ago. The funny thing was that I knew better and did it anyways. It could ruin your entire trip……Believe me.
