Durable tent recomendations wanted
Question:
Consider a canvas/duck wall tent – perhaps 10 x 12 or so. Very durable, large enough for 4 people. I have had mine for 10 years and only use it for hunting – but it is still in perfect condition. No fading, no leaking and sheds wind very well. It is heavy – around 40 pounds – but you are not packing it. Durability – outfitters will set up a camp using wall tents and those camps are up for 3 – 4 months – come what may – rain, snow, or whatever. —- Jerry/Idaho

we have four boys ages 2.5 to 9. We just moved to Norfork, VA and as my husband is gone alotnow (sea duty), I need to start doing something with these boys, camping was a child hood favorite of mine. I need to know a little more about those wall tents. Are they hard to put up and can I do it by myself. I want something that has room for the kids to move around a little (2.5yrs, 5yr,7yr,and 9yr). Thank you

I’m pretty happy with Bean’s Vector Dome 6. With the Fly on and closed up /staked down, it would probably stand up well to those random big , windy T-storms you’re likely to get I especially like the "back door" and front vestibule.

AHHHH the memories i spent the hole school summer break in parents backyard in 78 slept thru thundertorms in indiana only nite i didnt stay i it was during a tornado watch had visions of wizard of oz i used a coleman canvas cabin tent 8×12 6′ center height also saturated the canvas with waterproofing b4 camping out think i moved the tent every 4 days to not use kill the grass also!!! only draw back i found out the tent doesnt not breath to well in the sun but on rainy days w/o tarp r fly i was dry…and if my brother didnt sell it on me when i went into service i ‘d still have it!!! tried the newer tents uv is a killer on nylon but sprayed the tent with 3m 303 protectant www.303-products.com so hopefully i might get a few yrs extra out of the newer nylon tents.. so either get canvas or if using the tents at walmart etc or stake a tarp to backside of tent then up over the tent and use poles to hold the tarp up and u have a mini-porch to use…sometimes looks tacky but $15 4 a tarp is cheaper than replacing the tent after uv plays havoc on ur tent terry

The UV degradation of nylon is a fact, but it’s easy to slip into silliness over the whole thing. Nothing lasts forever, and if you leave it up all summer it will fade quite a bit.

one’s summer’s worth of UV can ruin a nylon tent. Fade, and the degradation that is similar to dry rot – loss of tensile strength, tear resistance and so on. You can protect your tent with a tarp if you need to. I have a Moss tent from about 15 years ago. Still going strong. I recall reading about a Moss tent that was set up and left up for multiple years in Africa. Lots of sun day in and day out and occasional storms that were surprising. I’d trust a Moss tent to stand up to what you intend. Ask Moss directly. polyester flies hold up much better to UV than nylon. penny

Want a great tent. WoodsCanada tent. We have one and love it. They have a wide asortment, and the one that fits your desire sounds like the NightSky 4. It it reasonably priced, free from condensation, and you can keep it up all year round if you want. CHeck it our http://www.blackhillsoutdoorgear.com/. They are a good company to deal with. Good Luck.

Nylon degrades when exposed to UV for long periods, so would be a poor choice for you. Polyester, at least for the fly, found in a number of tents these days, would be a better choice. As you won’t be carrying it much, you could also look at canvas. Happy trails, Gary (net.yogi.bear) at the 51st percentile of ursine intelligence Gary D.
