Question:

Heading up to Lassen Volcanic National Park real soon. Any suggestions on must see spots? Anyone ever been up to Lava Beds National Monument even further north? Just got a new killer tent with tons of windows for stargazing… & a super good rainfly / vestibule too. Can’t wait to test it out in some serious weather. When does Northern Cal weather start the rains.. late SEPT?

Response:

Lava Beds is on the lower slopes of the Medicine Lake volcano – its main claim to fame is numerous lava tubes, where liquid lava continued pouring out after the surface cooled & solidified, leaving caves. The setting is high desert — sagebrush & junipers mainly. Pleasant, uncrowded campground.  Next door is Tule Lake Wildlife Refuge, if you’re into birding.  Definitely worth a trip if you’re up that way; probably a bit far from Lassen for a day trip. Rain starts somewhere between Oct and Dec, depending on the year. Probably a few of the early season storms that don’t make it down to central CA graze the far north earlier in the fall. Thanks so much Neil! I have decide to break Lava Beds & Lassen National Park into two seperate trips. I will hit up Lava Beds later this fall season, but Labor Day is looking great for my Lassen adventure. If anyone in California wants to head up to Lassen with your Camping Group, lemme know ASAP. We still have some room left. I am leaving Monday eve for the drive north & will only be checking my email once during week.
