San Francisco Campground please?
Question:
> I am surprised that no one mentions this. > Half Moon Bay State Beach
I was the second poster on this group, and I did mention it. But no reservations are accepted here, it’s first come, first served. There is a rather expensive $40-50 RV Park just north of here with an ocean view. Really just a parking lot with full hookups. Half moon bay state park has no hookups, but does have a dump station and water.

Glenn, Another location is Samuel P Taylor State Park in Marin County. It would be less than an hour to the Oakland show. It has lovely campgrounds among redwoods and Sam Taylor Creek is ideal for children to play in. It is relatively protected from the weather, too. A plus is that you would be less than 25 minutes from Pt Reyes National Seashore!!! Karl

Your recommendations sould be very helpful. Towards the end of April I will be visiting the San Francisco area to attend the sailing yacht boat show at Oakland. We are pulling our micro-tent trailer and are looking for a place to camp. We would like to take a day or two to visit San Francisco and it’s attractions too. We are looking for a quiet scenic place suitable for young children. Ocean would be great! Pools and hot tub are great too! Something with a unique flair would be cool! Did I mention we are traveling on a bit of a skinny budget? Glenn. Airdrie, Alberta Canada

Let’s see if I have this right. You want near San Francisco, a pool and hot tub… and you want cheap???? Yea, right. However…… Lake Chabot county park is a great place in the Oakland hills. It’s very cheap, and the views are spectacular. There’s fishing and boating in the lake. http://www.ebparks.org/parks/lakechab.htm It’s not very far from Oakland and San Francisco. Also, there’s a state park in Half moon Bay, right on the Ocean, but it’s on a first come, first served basis. Camping there is $12 a night and it’s only 30-45 minutes from San Francisco, but add another 20-30 minutes to Oakland. You also might enjoy camping in the Delta area, 1 hour from Oakland. It’s very hot there in the summer, if you like hot weather. Brannan Island state park, near Rio Vista, is a good place to stay. There’s great boating, windsurfing and fishing in the vicinity. Good luck with your trip.

A much better URL for ‘Anthony Chabot Regional Park’ is http://www.ebparks.org/parks/anchabot.htm because it includes information about camping and other activities, plus a detailed map, not contained in the one in the message above. For rates and a detailed map of the campground see http://www.ebparks.org/resources/pdf/camp/chabot_camp.pdf Mike

Hi Glen Yes, I agree Anthony Chabot is great, but you will want to reserve ahead of time, and if you don’t like driving in a very congested city, and paying for expensive parking, I would like to suggest using the B.A.R.T. system (Bay Area Rail Transit). It was well worth the small amount of money we paid for the 4 of us, and no pressure with unfamiliar roads. There is a station right there in Castro Valley. You just park and ride, it will take you to all the famous spots. Hope that helps. Tammy

None of the fineries, but Big Basin redwood forest is awesome (located in Scotts Valley, just south of S.F.). They have showers

Can you get a big rig in there? If memory serves me well, the roads are very narrow and windy, and will the spaces there accommodate a 36 foot coach?

Actually, I’ve done narrow and windy in my 36 ft RV, but always wondered who would end up backing up should another behemoth come from the other way. Did the narrow road that goes to Folsom lake on the east side of the lake last year. Quite an adventure which I won’t repeat.
Response:
That’s pretty understandable. My ambition is to move aboard a yacht and sail Florida and the Caribbean. Not so much backing up there. I did the yacht liveaboard thing for five years in the San Francisco Bay. You’re right, not too much backing up, but not so much space on a 30 foot sailboat compared to a 36 foot motor home with slideout.

May not be what you are you are looking for, but there is a campground (Rv Park really) in the parking lot of 3COM park. I have used for the last 10 years when the Rams/SF game rolls around. It is surrounded by a 7 foot block fence and supplies quite a wind block. A small walk to the bay (100 yards) and close to the city. Bay Bridge is 5 min away. Just south of SF off highway 1 is Pacifica. There is an RV park right there on the coast that takes short timers. -steve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Your recommendations sould be very helpful.
