I think I’d probably go with a Roland Micro Cube http://www.rolandus.com/products/details.asp?catid=7&subcatid=32&prod… Check out the video NAMM booth demo. I like the Vox sound in the demo. In the audio demos, the Stack & British sounds seem very good. Six AA batteries, or an AC adapter. 20 hours on the batteries, which isn’t too bad. I don’t know how much work it would be adopting it to run off a Cig Lighter. I’d probably just use batteries though. I’ve never played one, but I’ve heard good reports about them, and the sound samples and NAMM demo are good. I liked my Cube15 a lot, and gave it to a beginner for a first amp. I’d definitely buy one of these Micro Cubes. I almost has Micro Cube GAS anyhow. Pete — It’s been that way since time began. You wanna try & change change something that’s worked for ten zillion years? –Zorak

I don’t have an amp recommendation, but this might be helpful: If your future amp comes with a transformer (wallwart) for 110v line voltage, you could use something like this as long as your amp requires <150 watts (actual power requirement, not output wattage). http://www.accessorygenie.com/detail.aspx?ID=6167 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hey folks; >I’m getting into trucking and like to take my guitar everywhere. I’d >like to find a practice amp that runs off of a car lighter outlet. They >usually put out 12 volts. I like some of the battery powered amps out >there, but I hate buying batteries. LOL. >I know, I should do a search, and I will next, but I just wanted to see >if someone out here already had experience with something that they >would recommend (or not…) >Thanx >Greg

althought I am not a fan of their larger amps their taxi and limo battery amps are neat, and have wall and 12v adapters http://www.samedaymusic.com/product–CRATX15 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hey folks; >I’m getting into trucking and like to take my guitar everywhere.

Anything that runs on 6 batteries, 6 X 1.5 vdc = 9 vdc. Radio Shack sells a voltage regulator chip which reduces 12 vdc, (actually about 13.5 vdc from the truck lighter) to a constant 9 volts. This requires a bit of tinkering. I have a Sony CFS-W305 ghetto blaster tape player with CD inputs. It has two RCA sockets for plugging in a Discman. You can plug a guitar straight in, either just one channel or both with a splitter. Volume needs to be turned right up. Headphones work good. Tone sucks, unless you play clean.

I would recommend the Roland Micro Cube http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/480… It comes with a AC adaptor, then you could probably find a portable power adaptor (I had one a couple years back that worked great with my laptop computer in my pickup truck cig lighter plug. Here is a link to one on compusa … but shop around for different brands. The pasted below is just to demonstrate the "TYPE" of item I’m talking about. I had a different brand all together. http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=320076&… With the microcube and a power adaptor for the cig lighter, you’ll be rockin’ in no time.
Now that I’m thinking about it – think I used to use a targus brand adaptor (had a cord for the wall and the end changed to allow the cig lighter end (with approx 6 changeable ends). http://www.targus.com and check out some of their power adaptors (that have cigarette lighter adaptors). _Bigred

Most DC powered devices will operate on a wide range of voltages. Your 9 volt amp might actually operate without harm on anything from 6 to 18 volts. It would develop more or less power depending on the voltage. Cheers, Roy

Well, I’ll put it this way…at worst, the amp models give you several different distinct sounds, some cleanish, and some dirtier. None of the more OD models is off in "GuitarByAlesis" patch mode…you can hear what they were going for with the models…and they are all usable. The Vox and Marshall settings are OK, but it’s a tiny amp so in person, it doesn’t have the impact…but it might sound bigger if recorded with a mike. I’ve heard a recording (sm57 on speaker, into a soundcard w/garageband) and the Blackface setting with a little onboard reverb and it sounds surprisingly good. I’m still getting used to it and have not played humbuckers through it yet… So far my only quibbles are the weird multi-use knobs for chorus/flange and echo/reverb…and that it sounds like the amp has a noise gate in the chain that can not be dialed out. That gate effect (or artifact) is something I’ve heard a couple of other ‘modeling’ boxes..it may have something to do with the modeling software or something…anyway, play one and you’ll her what I mean. Not a showstopper. For $100 brand new, it’s tough to beat for what it does.

That’s one of the things that concerned me with it only being a 2watt amp. Where the Roland NAMM demo probably had it mic’d, or through some line-out for the crowd, and the recording, I’d be relying on it’s own acoustics. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I’ve heard a recording (sm57 on speaker, into a soundcard w/garageband) >and the Blackface setting with a little onboard reverb and it sounds >surprisingly good. >I’m still getting used to it and have not played humbuckers through it >yet… >So far my only quibbles are the weird multi-use knobs for chorus/flange >and echo/reverb…and that it sounds like the amp has a noise gate in >the chain that can not be dialed out. >That gate effect (or artifact) is something I’ve heard a couple of >other ‘modeling’ boxes..it may have something to do with the modeling >software or something…anyway, play one and you’ll her what I mean. >Not a showstopper. >For $100 brand new, it’s tough to beat for what it does.

Good apartment dweller amp? Because guys in apartment building keep coming to aga saying they need an amp that sounds good at low volumes. I think I’ve given up on being in those threads though, because they always insist that they neeeeeeeeeeed a tuuuuuuuube amp. Oh really.
>Most DC powered devices will operate on a wide range of voltages. Your 9 >volt amp might actually operate without harm on anything from 6 to 18 volts. >It would develop more or less power depending on the voltage. >Cheers, Roy

OK, Roy. This is true up to a point, butt….. might operate without harm!!?? He just paid $100 plus for a new toy. 13.5 vdc into a 9 vdc device is 150% over factory spec. Who knows what tiny little IC’s are being used in these mini circuit boards? The voltage regulator chip and a couple of resistors = $15. Another thing to look for is the lighter adapter that has a built-in fuse holder, used for some cell phone chargers and such. Start with a 2 amp fuse if it blows right away try a 3. The truck lighter socket most likely has a higher fuse rating like 10 amp, which is enough to cook with.

The Champ’s sound, I guess you can’t expect it to replace that. But I knew a guy who had to add an L-pad to one, just to use it in an apartment. He drilled a hole in the side of the cabinet, and stuck the L-pad through it! That was about 25 or so years ago.
> > If we wish to remain in the domain of science, rather than politics, we > must continue to debate any theory, no matter how well established.

Rich Koerner objected: > You don’t DEBATE theories. You PROVE them, and make them FACTS!!!!

That was the old, well-proven way of doing science, as formalized inter alia by Sir Karl Popper. It no longer applies to the environment. The problem with the debate on the environment is that it has been removed from the spheres of both science and politics. The body which heavily influences environmental policy (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – IPCC) has taken three fatal steps: 1. It has repeatedly rewritten, or forced scientists to rewrite, scientific findings in stronger terms to suit political aims, and in several notorious cases the various consecutive drafts have in fact turned the finding of the scientists on its head, the final executive summary for politicians saying exactly the opposite of what the scientists found and said in their report. A notorious example was the major summary in the 1996 report in which the scientists concluded there is no evidence that global warming is caused by human activity. When the report came out, the summary claimed that the evidence proves that global warming is caused by human activity! This institutionalizes lying. 2. Glory- and fund-hunting "scientists" have been encouraged to state their "feelings" as if these have the same validity as repeatable scientific proof. An example is the 2001 report in which the summary was diametrically at odds with the data in the report; the chief "scientist’s" excuse was that he "felt" that politicians "should" take the environment seriously! At the same time naysayers who demand proof and honest interpretation of data have been persecuted in the press and by the environmental establishment, funding bodies and suchlike, the vilification of the statistician Bjorn Lomborg being merely the most egregious and best documented example. This is an Inquisition to persecute skeptics. In addition, any questioning of scientists, their findings and investigations by political authorities is presented as persecution, as current congressional investigations of controversial findings with big public finance implications have been misrepresented as a witchhunt. That is a mechanism for turning scientists into a new priesthood, with their own courts and their own law, totally outside democratic control. 3. Worst of all, it was officially decided that environmental measures should not be subjected to cost-benefit analysis. This is simply crazy, because the only measure any democracy has in the end is cost-benefit. You cannot spend the taxpayer’s money without limit for any purpose whatsoever. But this crazy *official* concept goes further than even that in its implications. For instance, legislators are not supposed to make commonplace comparisons with other calls on the public purse, such as Health. This takes the Environment (note the new capital) out of politics and makes it into an official Super-Religion, a faith no dares question. See above about the Inquisition persecuting skeptics and the immunity of the new faith from rationality, law and democratic oversight. So who will control this new faith? Why, the pressure groups who have so successfully brought it about. It’s the new fascism. *** I might also remark that the Last Rational Age started on 29 May 1919 when Eddington used the eclipse of the sun to prove Einstein’s relativity theory. Einstein had set three tests and insisted all three tests, the red shift during the eclipse being the last, be met before the theory would be accepted as valid. Einstein wrote to Eddington: "If it were proved that this effect does not exist in nature then the whole theory would have to be abondoned." After this scientific relativity was confused with moral relativity to the point where a worldwide "scientific" body (IPCC) would in 1996 persuade scientists to sign their names to lies and then from 2001 to substitute their "feelings" for observable fact. That was the end of science; 2001 marks the beginning of The Age of Feely-Feely. A few years later we have an idiot from a pressure group telling us (apparently without understanding how much the single sentence reveals of the methods and motives of these power-hungry minority pressure groups): >If we wish to remain in the domain of science, rather than politics, we > must continue to debate any theory, no matter how well established.

which translates into plain English as a threat: "We don’t care shit what science proves, and we don’t care shit for the supervision of our elected representatives, we’ll continue pressuring everyone until you give way because our ‘feelings’ are more important than science or democracy." The abandonment of science for the Environmental Faith and mob rule may yet give the green pressure groups their destructive dream of cottage industry and no cars.
Sure I do, Sweetie. See my bike here: http://members.lycos.co.uk/fiultra/BICYCLE%20%26%20CYCLING.html Chances are I’m much, much greener than the quacking ducks dragging their arses on AGA; I don’t go anywhere a car is required; instead I make people come to me; I eat off wooden plates and wear longlasting cotton, wool and silk, nothing artificial; there is no waste in my house and everything that can be recycled is recycled. I’m also very much better informed about the underlying statistics to environmental questions than any and all of you kooks. I should be: I’m by training a psychologist and economist, both of them just jumped-up statisticians with a bit more class than the techie types who practice straight stats for a living. I also, while I worked in advertising, was in charge of a department that had a budget of USD160m of our clients’ money for research every year, so I know how to read a set of numbers and, more to the point, how to discover if someone is using the stats to pull the wool.

The body which heavily influences environmental policy (International Panel on Climate Change – IPCC) has taken three fatal steps: 1.
Your use of the word inquisition is disturbingly appropriate. I wish it were not so. I had earlier in the day searched for the definition of the word science, for reference for a post here in AGA.
Male Children must be under 8 years of age to attend. Festy Virgin Info If you have never attended a festival of this size, we would like to give you some idea of what to expect. First, you will turn in your Festival Ticket for a wristband at the Welcome Station. If you have not pre-purchased your ticket you may do so at this time for CASH ONLY. Wristbands must be displayed at all times. Different bands will be given for Day passes and 4 day passes. You will also pick up a festival program with information about the activities and workshops at the Festival. You will be asked to sign up for a two hour work shift. Womyn that are only attending for one day only will not be requested to sign up for a work shift. Work Shifts are very important to keep the cost of the Festival reasonable. You may sign up for parking, security, concession, etc. Doing a two hour workshift gives you the opportunity to meet and work with womyn you probably would never meet otherwise. You will then be directed to a parking area where a shuttle will be available to assist you in moving your camping equipment into the Festival Area. You will be able to leave the campground to go to local restaurants and stores if you need to. We request that you limit your driving to a minimum. You should bring adequate camping equipment and tarps, do not forget to bring feminine needs as such a concentration of womyn and activities can get you out of time with your monthly. Check out our Tent for leaks before packing it for the festival. Bring bug repellant, lawn chairs (you will need to bring your chair or blanket to Day Stage and Night Stage), flashlights and batteries and snacks for those late night cravings. The weather in Georgia in late April is warm during the day, but a light jacket or flannel shirt for nights, might be needed. It may get down to the 40’s and 50’s at night but warm up to the high 70’s during the Day. If you are a light sleeper and want to sleep at night before 2 a.m. it would be best to find a camping area far from the Night Stage. There will be food vendors at the campground but you may also bring your meals. Many womyn have started bringing Bicylces and small mopeds to help then get around the Festival area, so long as this does not become a problem, it will be allowed. There is a code of conduct at a Festival. You must respect others. Respect Chem-Free and Non-Smoking areas. Respect the Land and do not leave trash or debris behind. Keep your Butts in a Butt Can, no not throw them down on Mother Earth. Any acts of violence will get you put off the Land. (This does not refer to S&M between consenting adults.)
We hope to camp in St John for a week, over New Years. We stayed in a tent at Cinnamon Bay in Feb’2000 and loved it. Are looking at a cottage this time (avoids nighttime donkeys/mongoose raids) but are torn because the tents were so peaceful/private. We are not partiers, but we do enjoy interacting with locals and fellow travelers. Although we experienced Cinnamon Bay, we heard great things about Maho Bay years ago. So here are our questions: 1. What should we know about Maho in terms of noise level and partiers over the New Years period (Dec28-Jan4). Is it mostly a college age crowd, young adults, older folks, families, or a broad range? 2. I saw that Maho Bay has an airstrip with a daily large flight to/from Europe since 2000. True? Has that made camping at Maho less attractive to you who were fans? 3. Is staying in a Maho tent cottage more of a private or a community experience (e.g., are the tent cottage decks mostly private or are they less-private and tightly coupled to adjacent guests). 4. We experienced February conditions before. Are the weather, sea, & temperature much different around New Years? 5. Any other suggestions or favorite things to do would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jim & Patricia

Response:

Sorry for the reply to my own post, but our plans have changed. It will not be over New Years after all, more like mid-January. So here are my updated questions about Maho tent cottage camping (versus Cinnamon Bay cottages): 1. Are the Maho tent cottages reasonably quite from surrounding travelers? 2. Is the Maho Bay airstrip something that makes Maho Bay less attractive to you who were fans of that camping location in the past? 3. Do the Maho tent cottages have private yard spaces/decks for cooking, reading, and relaxing? Or is it more tightly coupled to adjacent cottages and guests. We loved sitting at our tent site at Cinnamon in the morning and watching the birds and sipping coffee.
I thought I should close out this thread myself by correcting the following error. Apparently, the Maho Bay (or beach) where there is a 747 airstrip is on St. Maarten St. Martin, not the Maho Bay on St. John.
I was wondering about that airstrip, since I can’t remember that much semi-fllat space on St. John. For that matter, I’m not sure that the island is much longer than the necessary length for a runway for a 747. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I thought I should close out this thread myself by correcting the following >error. The > quality of my clutch release seems to be closer to ‘correct’, as opposed > to either too fast or too slow when it happens, but thats a rough > observation. It is a sort of ‘whirr’ > sound, maybe comparable to the noise that my car would make in reverse. > It is brief when I hear it; definitely less than a second, and I don’t > think I’ve heard it in the summertime (Wisconsin, USA). Is this anything > to worry about? It doesn’t happen everytime I drive, or only when its > extremely cold. The car has ~140k miles on what I assume is the original > clutch. > Mark

My experience with funky noises and the clutch were the damping springs came loose and were banging on the flywheel bolts.
Response:

Mista Bone, I just thought of a condition that may have to be present when I hear the noise. I think I hear it when my steering is at an extreme, like when I’m sitting in a median and then pulling out, or starting off from a stop sign onto a wide avenue. Its a mechanical sounding noise. Maybe I can try to record it sometime. I got a ‘91 DX Civic for few years ago for free when it had 180k. A bearing in the tranny was bad. I forget which bearing does what, but I was told it was not the throwout. The tranny made a loud noise the whole time I had the car whenever the clutch was NOT engaged, even just sitting in neutral. I was able to take it to over 200k before the clutch got really bad. The noise in my car now is somewhat similair, but much quieter. The car was getting really rusty and had not been maintained the best during it’s life, so it wasn’t really worth it to fix it. The engine still seemed solid, and didn’t eat that much oil. I also knew less about car mechanics then. I’ve never done a clutch job, and may consider one this summer. I’ve got the Helm manual, but will probably start looking for good internet pages too. Is there anything in the RAMH FAQ that Tegger maintains? I think I’d be comfortable getting to the tranny and dropping it if necessary. I don’t know if it would be smart do do the actual clutch work myself. I know a really good Toyota mechanic who could maybe come help me out just for that portion of the job. I’d like to be comfortable taking the car on longer (>500 mile) trips. I might try to go road tripping and camping out west this summer and I think I’d need to drive my car. I trust the engine a lot, but I wouldn’t mind doing the clutch.
>I couldn’t feel my fingers >hitting the strings – but I could hear the notes coming out of the amp >so I knew I was playing OK. Very strange sensation though.

Indeed. I commented to my partner onstage that it was kinda like sitting on your hand to put it to sleep before ya had a tug to make it feel like someone else’s hand doing the deed. >I hope you’ve got some fingerless gloves for those gigs. I think I’d >learn to play wearing something like thin leather driving gloves if I >had to do regular ski town gigs. I really hate playing in the cold.

I was wearing some wool fingerless gloves. They keep the wrists and 3rd knuckles warm(-ish) but they provide some unwanted muting if I’m not careful and do nothing for the finger tips and 1st/2nd knuckles. >This usually happens to me when I can’t hear myself well enough, this is >especially true when playing a fretless instrument. The combination of >numb fingers and too low a level would be guaranteed to cause finger >damage.

I’ve made it clear I won’t do any more of these dates without heat. The organizers from the local tourism office are very unorganized though and I’m sure I’ll have a chance to put my resolve on this to the test. If they didn’t pay so well it wouldn’t be an issue. Sometimes it’s difficult being a musical whore. jeffb van.bc.ca

I did an outdoor gig in Ontario in the winter years ago. On tear down, I pulled the pin on one of those old heavy speaker stands, and it slammed down and caught my finger. There was a big chunk of the tip of my finger missing and a 45 degree cut out of my fingernail. I stood there looking at it thinking it should hurt or at least bleed…. I went inside and showed the guys in the band. Once I warmed up,I started bleeding like I was in a horror movie, and my finger was just throbbing. I went back outside and jammed my finger in a snow bank. Sometimes cold is good. Jay S

Exactly right. When you don’t have enough volume or TONE in the mix you are hearing, you end up making a mess of your fingers by trying to play harder instead of gripping your bass by the neck and clubbing the guitar players senseless while yelling ‘TURN DOWN BITCHEZ!’ — Javier Gonzalez Nicolini Ingeniero Civil en Computacion – Universidad de Chile

Oh, probably. I’m a real minimalist where amps are concerned and on that one I was just going through the PA with no monitor. I play with a lot of force drawing the sound out of the instrument and pretty quiet through an amp under the best of circumstances. I could hear myself ok but I wasn’t as loud as I might have been through a bass amp or my own monitor channel. I s’pose I should know better… Later last night I ran into a friend who plays mostly latin music on an Ampeg Baby Bass. Same thing happened to him a couple of months ago and the whole callus had lifted and he’s working on a new one now. I’m sure gonna pay better attention to this in the future. jeffb van.bc.ca

Here’s a bit about an adventure I had last Friday…and the lesson learned from it. I had a gig this past Friday night….so I’m doing the usual stuff…changing strings, polishing my guitars, etc. I’ve noticed that I’m getting a little scratchy noise from my 25 year old Gibson Flying V. I figure that there’s a little crud buit up on the 1/4" jack contacts. So, I get my trusty can of Caig cleaner, squirt a bit in and insert a cord to clean it up. Only…..the cord goes in…and back out *way* too easy. Ohhh……NOOOO. The jack is broken. After 25 years, it was finished. Let’s see….how long until I have to leave for the gig? An hour??? Yikes…… On the way to my little work shop, I’m thinking…..geez, do I even have a 1/4" jack? I’d better….no place to get one at this hour! Well, luck was with me, as I had 2…and one was a good quality jack that will do the job for years to come. I made it….barely. Replacing the jack on a Flying V requires removing the bridge, pickguard, etc. It’s not a difficult job, but a bit time consuming. When you put it back together, you have to adjust the action, intonation, etc. As I thought about it…..what if I had not had a replacement part? Those are piddly cheap little parts, but how many of us have a spare lying around…just in case? I routinely keep spare plugs (1/4", XLR, etc.), but from now on, I’ll make sure I have a couple of *good* quality jacks of all types I use….because you never know, eh? It would have sucked to not be able to use my favorite guitar, all because I didn’t have a 3 dollar part. And more, I’d say it’s a safe bet that most all of our amps use 1/4" input jacks. (some of you may need a chassis mount jack for that, and thus, may not wish to attempt that one.) I suppose my lesson learned is this: Keep a spare *everything*, regardless of how cheap it is, if it will keep you from playing, should it fail. OK, so that’s not really practical….but….I keep spare tubes, speakers, amps, cords, strings, straps, stands, mics, connectors, plugs……and now, 1/4" jacks…several! Anyone else have some piddly cheap little part prevent or almost prevent their using a prized piece of gear? Granted, my experience was really more of a "scare", but seriously….I didn’t know if I had a spare, until I found one. In the meantime, I was sweating!! Tell us about your adventures, so we may all learn! Thanks, Mike P.

String pegs in the case/bag of each guitar that needs them. Allen wrenches in the case/bag of each guitar, screwdriver , etc. Never know when your toolbag might get left in a hurry. You can never have too many spares. And the folks you gig with might not be so smart. At least until they need some part they thought would never break.

I usually have the opposite problem. I’ve collected enough guitars and amps that some of them sit around unused for a while before I get around to using them. If I had a guitar or amp go down while I was at home I’d just grab something else and consider it an opportunity to bring another player in off the bench. Of course having spare gear at home wouldn’t help me much if something broke while I was at a show. So your point is still well taken. I did recently have a show that I’d decided was definitely a job for a Tele (don’t remember why). My Mexi Tele was at the rehearsal space. I got my Shecter Tele and gave it a once over and remembered that the nut on the input jack was on wrong. It had come loose once and I finger tightened it back in a hurry and at the wrong angle, so it wasn’t all the way on. By the time I got it off to put it on correctly I found that it had somehow gotten stripped. I didn’t have enough time to replace it before I had to leave, and started cursing myself for having messed with it in the first place. Fortunately at the last minute I managed to get it past the stripped section and threaded on correctly. I should think twice before I attempt any last minute repairs that might render a piece of gear worse off than before I started. -Scott

Maybe not quite the same, but… A long time ago I learned (the hard way) that a tech always needs *two* multimeters (on an in-the-field job site); dang if I didn’t have one go ‘partially wrong’ once (readings inaccurate, intermittent) without a backup; cost me 2+ hours of wasted, non-billed time (I thought things weren’t quite right, but trusted my meter… I mean, the batteries in it were good!) And how are you going to fix the *first* meter if you don’t have a *second* one??? (one step further, the same for oscilloscopes too…) -Robert "Every vehicle he drives sports its’ own digital multimeter!" (been carrying the required bag of assorted fuses for years)

>Anyone else have some piddly cheap > little part prevent or almost prevent their > using a prized piece of gear? Granted, > my experience was really more of a > "scare", but seriously….I didn’t know if I > had a spare, until I found one.
Well, it’s not exactly cheap, but I had my ADA MC-1 midi pedal go down…no patch changes for my rack rig! If there was ever a weak link in the chain! I bought another one from Ebay, and have yet to get the first one repaired…shame on me! Come to think of it, I should get a backup 7-pin cable, too. I have my SansAmp, Tri-A.C., and Legend amp and cab at my gigs, so I still have a rig if any part of the rack goes down…but man, am I spoiled by midi and phantom power! ~Rich See my gear at the link! http://community.webtv.net/one4rich/RichsGuitarPage

Wow, Mike — that’s the first time I’ve heard of a 1/4" jack failing outright. Was it a typical American jack (e.g. Switchcraft model 11) or an Asian imitation? My experience is that some of the Asian jacks will lose contact tension from time to time — you can just bend the tip contact a little (you can do that with a little screwdriver, right through the hole without removing the jack) and it’ll be years before that problem recurs, though. Did the tip contact actually break off on yours? Posted via TITANnews – Uncensored Newsgroups Access >>>> at http://www.TitanNews.com <<<< -=Every Newsgroup – Anonymous, UNCENSORED, BROADBAND Downloads=-

Hello Mike, It may beg the question, but why not have a good second guitar as a back-up to your fav "V"? That way if you have a problem you’ve got a back-up guitar and don’t have to sweat the time just prior to the gig. That 45 minutes before the start of the first set is when I’m sitting at a table off the stage, getting limbered up and doing scales, modes, finger and hand stretching exercises, and getting into the vibe of the room. You may already have a second (or third) guitar, but as I didn’t see it mentioned, I thought it beneficial to point out to the reader that if a guy is gigging, a second guitar really makes sense from so many angles. I own a Les Paul Classic, a Strat and a Tele, and often take all three to the gig – not only do I have great back-ups, I "want" to play them and usually work all three into the evening. For most gigs I’ll take two amps; not only do I like the sound and feel of a multi-amp rig, if a problem arises with one amp I have my back-up already on-line and ready to go. I’m an Eagle Scout with a history of camping, so I’ve made mental and physical lists for a long time of what I need to accomplish a task or goal. For a gig I take along a kit box that has spare fuses, instrument and speaker cords, tubes, spare overdrive pedal, tools, cloth and paper towels, duct tape, 9 volt batteries, etc. Each of my guitars usually have a minimum of two extra sets of strings in the case, along with simple but effective ear plugs for hearing protection if I need `em. And plenty of guitar picks.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Here’s a bit about an adventure I had last Friday…and the lesson > learned from it. > I had a gig this past Friday night….so I’m doing the usual > stuff…changing strings, polishing my guitars, etc. I’ve noticed that > I’m getting a little scratchy noise from my 25 year old Gibson Flying > V. I figure that there’s a little crud buit up on the 1/4" jack > contacts. So, I get my trusty can of Caig cleaner, squirt a bit in and > insert a cord to clean it up. > Only…..the cord goes in…and back out *way* too easy. Ohhh……NOOOO. > The jack is broken. After 25 years, it was finished. Let’s see….how > long until I have to leave for the gig? An hour??? Yikes…… > On the way to my little work shop, I’m thinking…..geez, do I even have > a 1/4" jack? I’d better….no place to get one at this hour! Well, > luck was with me, as I had 2…and one was a good quality jack that will > do the job for years to come. > I made it….barely. Replacing the jack on a Flying V requires removing > the bridge, pickguard, etc. It’s not a difficult job, but a bit time > consuming. When you put it back together, you have to adjust the > action, intonation, etc. > As I thought about it…..what if I had not had a replacement part? > Those are piddly cheap little parts, but how many of us have a spare > lying around…just in case? I routinely keep spare plugs (1/4", XLR, > etc.), but from now on, I’ll make sure I have a couple of *good* quality > jacks of all types I use….because you never know, eh? It would have > sucked to not be able to use my favorite guitar, all because I didn’t > have a 3 dollar part. And more, I’d say it’s a safe bet that most all > of our amps use 1/4" input jacks. (some of you may need a chassis mount > jack for that, and thus, may not wish to attempt that one.) > I suppose my lesson learned is this: Keep a spare *everything*, > regardless of how cheap it is, if it will keep you from playing, should > it fail. > OK, so that’s not really practical….but….I keep spare tubes, > speakers, amps, cords, strings, straps, stands, mics, connectors, > plugs……and now, 1/4" jacks…several! > Anyone else have some piddly cheap little part prevent or almost prevent > their using a prized piece of gear? Granted, my experience was really > more of a "scare", but seriously….I didn’t know if I had a spare, > until I found one. In the meantime, I was sweating!! > Tell us about your adventures, so we may all learn! > Thanks, > Mike P.

Hmmm.. My V has a small, round plate that the jack is attached to. I had assumed I could just unscrew that plate. Is your V different?

> A long time ago I learned (the hard way) that a tech always needs *two* > multimeters > (one step further, the same for oscilloscopes too…)

Couldn’t you use the oscilloscope to fix the meter? My favorite gig story: Years back when we didn’t HAVE spare gear, we were way outstate at a little high school and one of our microphones broke. I did have a little screwdriver and found a small broken wire inside – but we didn’t carry soldering irons or any of that stuff. So, I had the janitor let me into the metal shop and looked around on the floor. Soon found a splash of solder under a bench! Got a nail from the janitor and whacked it into a little piece of wood. Held matches under it to heat it up, and soldered the wire back together. Shoulda called ourselves the McGuyvers, I guess. miker

"Micing," by all applicable rules for English pronunciation, must rhyme with "icing." When you shorten the name "Michael" to "Mike," a change in form is required. This ain’t rocket science. "Mic" and "micing" simply make the user look ignorant, regardless of any "insider" status the use of such (fractured) jargon may confer. Please.
Was this really worth posting? A post made just to heartlessly and pointlessly insult someone who never did anything to you? What ever happened to "Though shalt not judge"? Aren’t you the guy who was posting about Jesus and about being a Christian? … pointlessly attacking a poster in a forum that is intended for fun and enjoyment? I know you will say I’m judging you, but honestly, I am just REALLY curious how you answer this question. Because if you are always mentioning that you are a Christian here and then at the same time being judgmental and hateful to people without cause, I am offended and do not appreciate your false advertising giving the religion of love a bad name.
Just yesterday I decided to check this group out again because I figured the political people should be finished with their posts that ruin the group since the elections are over… A few of the first things I have seen were LV telling a guy that "he is lucky that Jesus loves assholes too" etc…. and then I think he went on to say something else regarding what he thinks Jesus thinks. Then today I was genuinely appalled by his post which served absolutely no purpose other than to make someone look/feel like an idiot for misspelling something. It came across as very condescending, judgemental and mean spirited. Based on the previously mentioned post of his I ASSumed that he maintains that he is a Christian so I was simply confused because it made no sense- it didn’t add up. So I posted to see if he could make sense of it for me. The "witnessing" was just a Bible verse for any Christian who voted for Bush because they were under the false assumption that his actions are the actions of a Christian. Just as the quality of tree is known by the fruit it produces, the qulaity of a person is made known by their actions. … so I guess that makes two of us "wondering" around here, huh?
Nope, We have the same problem. The only solution that I have found is : Usually, when I am fishing I back up to the lake and sit on our hitch haul. I listen to the radio quietly, but if I leave the rear window open the light stays on attracting bugs! So I push on the latch in the door where the window latch would be if closed. This turns off the lights. Thats about the only thing I know to do. Searcher1

Well, not an override button, but on my ‘97 XLT the interior lights turn themselves off in about 20 minutes to avoid running the battery down. They come back on if you open another door for another 20 minutes. Try just waiting! =Vic= Bear Gap, PA

It will time out (and shut itself off) if a door is left open. This is more of a feature to prevent battery drain than for campers, but you should be able to make use of it. -Fred W

I saw a product at a local mall a few months ago and I saw it again tonight, it’s a flashlight that doesn’t need batteries. You just shake it back and forth for 30 seconds and you get about 20 mins of light from it. It has a couple of white LED’s and the case is clear allowing you to see the magnet that slides back and forth inside a coil of copper wire as you shake it. Anyone have any real world experience with these..?

Response:

I have no experience with the one you describe. I have a "no battery" flashlight, with built-in FM radio, no less, that was a safety award from work. It has a little fold-out crank, and you wind on it for a while, and then you can use the light or play the radio. Kind of gimmicky, IMHO, but it does work. I keep it in the truck, for emergency use. It’s not a new idea. Dynamo flashlights have been around since the late 1940’s at least. I remember my father having one; a small Bakelite cae with a handle that you squeezed… Squeezing the handle caused a sector gear to move, spinning a tiny pinion gear, which drove a PM dynamo. Eventually, continued use would wear the teeth off the sector gear. Using one of these will give a person an appreciation of just how much "work" goes in to making a useful light source. Gordon Richmond

I’ve played with a few of them. They use a high power magnet sliding through a coil as you shake it to generate power. This power gets stored in a small capacitor. Often they suggest you turn the switch off when shaking it for charging. If you don’t turn off the switch you can watch the LEDs pulse with the power spikes coming from the coil. They take a lot of shaking and they only produce useful light for a few times longer than you shake it. You wind up pausing every 20 or 30 seconds to give it a few more shakes. They’re main advantage is that they can be stored for long periods of time without worry about leaking batteries. Unfortunately, they’re only really bright enough to light your way to finding a regular flashlight and batteries for it. Personally, I think a better design would be to use this technology to update the old squeeze/crank flashlights. Using similar high powered magnets, power management circuitry and LED’s these old squeeze lights could actually be practical. One note, they use VERY strong magnets. Do not place them near credit cards. On a brighter note, you can usually hang them on your fridge. Anthony

I’ve got two of them. The ones I have are single led. It gives you light in the dark, but it doesn’t have the output a battery powered led light does. When you shake them you are charging a super capacitor. The are okay as an emergency light in that no batteries to be concerned with. We haven’t used them will camping yet, so my real world is limited. I was surprised at how long the cap held a charge with the led off.
yes they should be water tight. I had a play with one today and even the switch was actually a reed switch which did not need a hole in the case. The only water point of entry would be where the lens is, but that had a rubber grommet around it. It would be good for water sports.

While I understand the desire of the "vintage nazi" to have the old tube amps left in their original condition, an amp’s owner should have something to say about it, too. I wanted this mod done, and to Robert’s credit it was done with absolutely no permanent modifications. Now, I have no intentions of selling this amp, so it wasn’t really a concern to me, but I appreciate wanting an unmarked piece. Since its return to me, I have done one thing to it that has left a mark on it, though. I put the metal Weber badge on the lower front corner, and I drilled 4 small holes to mount it.
I don’t know. I don’t think I could sacrifice the tremolo on a vibro champ for anything. It is one of my favorite tremolo circuits ever.
I like it so far…I commented to Robert that it sounded farty with the pre on 10 and he said that’s the way it’s supposed to sound. Backed down to 8 or 9 it’s very rich and lively…it’s louder than I expected, and I haven’t had a chance to crank it…band rehearsal was cancelled yesterday, and I was planning on taking it along. Even on 2, with the pre on 8, it’s louder than I need for my usual basement playing…when I started to turn it up the wife came down…sleeping baby, etc. It’s based on a JCM800 preamp circuit, so it’s crunchy, but not "modern hi gain". I really want to turn it up all the way and get into the subtleties of the tone, but I haven’t had the chance yet. Maybe I’ll get time later today or tomorrow.
Okay, I went down and got it turned up for a little bit. It’s pretty good…I like it with the pre and post controls around 7, with the bass around 4 and the treble around 6. The normal volume control does have some influence in "drive" mode, and I kept it around 5. Beyond those limits the Weber speaker starts to suffer, and the low end gets really flubby. The "drive" mode takes the normal "Champ on Ten" tone up a few notches, and makes it crispier, too. It’s quite a bit louder, and very crunchy. To get a better handle on the *amp*, I disconnected the internal speaker and ran it into my Legend amp’s pair of 12" Celestion 65’s. This little amp really came to life! It sounds best with both the pre and post controls on 8, and the treble on 8 and the bass on 4. Very rock and roll, very Marshall’y. At full bore, it still gets farty in the low end, but with all of the controls except bass "on the 8’s" it’s really good. I played my Explorer and my Tele, and I got nice crunch, sustain, and controllable feedback. It’s very loud…not gigging loud, but definitely too loud for learning tunes and normal basement playing. If I’m playing metal, I’ll probably still run my SansAmp into it for the extra gain it provides, but for rock and blues, and small jams, it’s perfect just like it is.
Yeah, I suppose so…it only does it wide open, and there’s really not much need for that in my house. I guess I always seemed to equate that flubby sound with a speaker crapping out, but it kinda did that through my Legend cab, too. >Which Weber did you use? >Pete

If they had their way, the owner of the amp, the amp tech, and anyone else involved, are dead meat. One night I was having fun in Google and was doing searches on amp mods, to see what the world was doing. In one of the searches I came across a web BBS, and found I was the subject of a few threads. Boy, were they hanging my ass out to dry for mods that were up on my site. They were posting links to all the pictures they could find on my site, along with the verbal bashing. One of the guys was saying he travels the states a lot, and was going to look me up, and give me a piece of his mind. The fact that most of the items were my own stuff, and had been done BEFORE there was ever a vintage ANYTHING, didn’t seem to matter in the least. So, one day you and Robert too, may be made famous, as the most loved to bash, by the vintage nazi’s on the internet. Nothing makes me happier than to find my work pissed people off, when the owner was as happy as a pig in shit. The ass hole don’t get it. It ain’t their property, and it’s a free country. Life is to lived by your rules, not someone else’s. Carry on and enjoy your amp, and make all the music you can with it. There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who MAKE things happen, those who WATCH things happen, and those who WONDER what happened. The vintage nazi’s are in the second group. Who, along with the rest of the world, are the critics for those in the first group. Nothing ever changes, except for the calendar. > I wanted this mod done, and to Robert’s credit it was done with > absolutely no permanent modifications.
Are you sure they were made there and not really re-branded? Just curious. What brands? —-== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com – Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==—- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! >100,000 Newsgroups —= East/West-Coast Server Farms – Total Privacy via Encryption =—

I’m actually not sure of anything about them. I’ll have to take another look at them, but I know the power tubes either say made in Great Britain or something similar. They are marked Harmony, but I assumed they were just marked that way by Harmony. -Zach Omega – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->… Oh, and you got cheated. My > tubes are the original Harmony tubes as well, except that mine are > made in Britain including the EL84’s. > Are you sure they were made there > and not really re-branded? Just > curious. What brands? > —-== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com – Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==—- > http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! >100,000 Newsgroups > —= East/West-Coast Server Farms – Total Privacy via Encryption =—
