Going to A glacier: Learn about crevasses first. What you don’t know CAN hurt you. Going to Glacier National Park, I would highly recommend getting a good topo map and guidebook now for the planning stages. Trails Illustrated has good maps which cover a whole National Park each. Keep in mind that winter ends later at higher elevations. Happy trails, Gary (net.yogi.bear) at the 51st percentile of ursine intelligence Gary D. Winter does pretty much whatever Mother Nature decides. We have NO vote. Pete H — There’s such a thing as too much point on a pencil. H. Allen Smith

Absolutely true. However, those of us capable can observe and make conclusions. Fortune favors the well prepared. Happy trails, Gary (net.yogi.bear) at the 51st percentile of ursine intelligence Gary D. Schwartz, Needham, MA, USA Please reply to: garyDOTschwartzATpoboxDOTcom

Perhaps, with a note of caution, "Fortune steps less frequently on the well-prepared." Not being a curmudgeon, just cautious. I still recall from the early 70’s a TV PSA showing four support columns on the Gulf Coast, all that remained of a "hurricane-proof" house. I agree. Being favored is not a guarantee. There is nothing "something-proof", only "something-resistant". I have flooded waterproof containers, broken shatter-proof cups and unbreakable tools, crashed unbreakable software, and don’t get me started on rainwear. Just like gambling, the only way to win consistently is to own the place. Happy trails, Gary (net.yogi.bear) at the 51st percentile of ursine intelligence Gary D. Be sure to plan on hiking in a ways to Granite Chalet, almost sure to see goats and maybe sheep plus great views. If you plan on staying in a hotel in the park, make plans real soon. The hike to Grinnell Glacier is also great (not good if you have young children). — Steve Trimby

It would help to know where in the country you’re planning to visit, for one thing. I also wouldn’t recommend walking on it unless you are going to be hiring the services of an experienced guide. Any place is just great. You can move around. Make sure everyone has a large caliber handgun and knows how to use it.
