HELP! Camping near DC METRO AREA for COLLEGE KIDS!
Question:
> the females that I will be with WANT BATHROOMS if >possible.
I’ve never seen a group site yet that didn’t have modern outhouses. That means no running water, so make that clear to everyone. They’ll have to go to the main part of the ‘grounds if they want to flush or shower. (quietly, of course, if it’s after bed time.). However, you might find a park with running water and all for group sites. I’ve heard of a rare few, but they’re generally extra special and may be more expensive. Ask before you chose your campground and make an advance payment. >so that I could make an effort to NOT BE THAT KIND OF PERSON!!! >The last thing I want to do is disturb a family all night long just >because we want to have fun.
Group sites are it, then. And ask the registrar to put you at a distant group site if there is more than on in the campground. I wish everyone had your consideration. BTW, keep the bottles out of plain sight. Most State and Federal Parks and Forest campgrounds have a rule against booze (all that I’ve been at), but ignore it if it’s not right in their faces.

I was going to suggest some National /State Forests and Wildlife Management Areas, but at best the ‘facilities’ are Spot-a-Pots or outhouses. George Washington, Luray VA.; Greenridge, Flintstone MD.; Sleepy Creek, HedgesvilleW.V. As to campgrounds, check on Wayeside near Luray VA. they have changed owners since I was there. They had a large open area for tenters. 2 others are Happy Hills near Hancock MD, and Little Orleans Campground just west of Hancock. Also check out the C&O Canal west of Harpers Ferry. Little Orleans has a large walk in camping area but facilities are spot-a-pots maintained by the park service. Hope this helps. Ps: a little further away in the Savage River Area is New Germany State Park, which is frequented by the students from Frostburg. FLiP

To address this female in the outdoors issue, I guess what I should have made clearer is that I’m not going with people who camp regularly, and the females that I will be with WANT BATHROOMS if possible. They are not interested in digging holes behind random trees and all that stuff… while I know the males aren’t as concerned about having bathrooms or not. Let’s face it… there are tons of people who go to camp sites and party loud, drink like fish, and just make it an unpleasant experience for everyone around them. The reason for this post in the first place was so that I could make an effort to NOT BE THAT KIND OF PERSON!!! The last thing I want to do is disturb a family all night long just because we want to have fun. I’m talking openly about the fact that there will be drinking because it’s reality… and is something that will most likely be going on. I’m sorry if that offends people, but I feel that I am going about this responsibly as I’m actually trying to be considerate to other campers during this entire process. I hope that clears some things up. I greatly appreciate all the advice given to me so far!!! Keep it coming!!

The Appalachian Trail is about 60 minutes west of DC. Lots of room – - you won’t bother too many people. — Marty S. Baltimore, MD USA

find a group site.. far away from everyone else if you want to party. Just curious, why do the women need bathroom facilities and the men don’t? You can pee on a bush but they can’t? Don’t want to offend their delicate nature by having the girls dig a cat hole? They need plug ins for blow dryers? and yes, if you are rowdy and in the vicinity of other campers, expect to get hassled by the rangers. If you can handle primitive camping, I’d suggest a primitive site in the forest, just clean up after yourselves. ps

A bunch of friends and I (roughly 10-12 people total) are looking to go camping in the beginning of June. We are looking for a place in the DC metro area… no more than an hour and a half or so from Washington, DC. Since we are younger, there will be some drinking going on, so I’m looking for a place where we could go have some clean, moderatly quiet fun without disturbing other campers. We will have females with us too, so it is necessary to have bathroom accomodations for their use. There are so many campsites in the area but I’m hesitant to make a reservation without knowing if we’ll get hassled a lot by other campers and/or park rangers. Rest assured though, I am an avid camper and have and will continue to respect every campsite I go to, so please don’t get the idea that we are going to destroy any campsite you suggest. I’d appreciate any help you could give. Thank you.
