Kansas City
Question:
This isn’t really a camping question, but all you camping-type people are most likely to have the right answer for me. I’m going to be in Kansas City on business for a few days. in early April. Never been anywhere near the place. Are there any must-see parks, monuments, or other outdoorsy things I should see with my spare day? TIA, Neil
Response:
Depends on what you’re into Neil. There’s always the Country Club Plaza. It seems to be a must see for those who don’t live here. The liberty memorial which is across the street from Union Station which houses Science City. I could really go on, but don’t know your interests. — Steve Barker Stilwell, Kansas UP (Mopac) Coffeyville Sub MP 308 Nikon CP 995 PSP 7.04 Remove the "nospam" from my address to abuse my email box.

Thanks, Steve. Perhaps I should have been more specific. How about scenic natural areas and significant historical sites. Neil- you might have a look at the Missouri Conservation Atlas Online: http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/atlas/ Follow the "Find Areas by Area Name, by County or Region." You also might consider the MO State Parks homepage: http://www.mostateparks.com/ Swope Park in KC is nice but not really a camping option (at least, I don’t think), but Smithville Reservoir to the north does offer camping and is pleasant as well. Conservation Dept. has several properties in the KC area and they should be listed under the Kansas City Urban link on the first link… Good luck…

Neil, cruise around www.kansascity.com and in the meantime I’ll compose a list of my personal recommendations. Where exactly are you going to be staying? There are many suburbs with attractions also. — Steve Barker Stilwell, Kansas UP (Mopac) Coffeyville Sub MP 308 Nikon CP 995 PSP 7.04 Remove the "nospam" from my address to abuse my email box.

I haven’t pinned down exactly where to stay, but my project is in Leavenworth, so I’ll generally be north of KC. Thanks for the advice! The name of the small town on the Missouri river is Westin Missouri. Definitely worth a day of meandering about town, going down in the catacombs of wine cellars, and beer gardens. The food in town is excellent. Have a great time. Cheers, John Youngbauer

You might consider the "Country Club Plaza" area. There are art museums, historic fountains, and brush creek. Local lore has it that brush creek holds the remains of many underworld types entombed in yards of concrete. Not far from that area is the Grand Emporium for the Kansas City Jazz scene. Crown Center is also a point of interest – the site of the New Years Eve Hyatt balcony disaster, a truly great view of city lights at night at "Skys" restaurant, and a very good Japanese Restaurant = Kabuki. If that isn’t exciting enough for you then, you must go to the "Agriculture Hall of Fame" in Bonner Springs or the Leavenworth Hall of Shame at the Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth. Just down river on the eastern bank of the Missouri from Leavenworth is a small town that specializes in home brew, mead, beer and tobacco products. The name escapes me, but it is well known and a throwback in history to what appears to be circa Civil War. By the way the Civil War is referred to a the War between the States and there is no memory loss as to who was on what side of the line between Kansas and Missouri. Take your time wander around and you will find some very interesting sights, sounds, and people. Cheers, John Youngbauer {Previously from Lawrence Kansas – now in Santa Clarita CA)
