Do you mean an Akubra? http://www.akubra.com.au/ Check the web site above for details of distributors in your part of the world. Some of them are online and may be able to mail them to you. Daniel — Daniel Bowen, Melbourne, Australia Visiting Australia FAQ http://www.custard.net.au/australia/

An Akubra will run anywhere from AUD$150 up as I recall.  They are damned nice but they have the disadvantage of being worse for the wear after being tramelled by a Landcruiser.  I prefer the crushable sort myself, the kind that doubles as a pillow…

It’s not a proper "bushie’s" hat until it’s been run over a couple of times with the cruiser (or a tractor if you’re a farming type) and/or trampled by several horses, and survived several monsoonal rainstorms. (Be warned though, they shrink. Get one a cm or two oversized.) The other option, if you like the look, is a crushable leather hat. Don’t get one of the polished ones, they’re a tourist’s hat and won’t survive the sort of abuse you would want to give it. Some time back I saw a line of crushable suede hats at a local camping store (Great Outdoors, I think) – damn near indestructible and a lot cheaper than an Akubra. It depends on whether you have your heart set on "the look" or you just want the practicality. Dave Campbell

Last time I was privvy to retail price of an Akubra, it was around A$80, but that was about 6 years ago. No doubt like all things, they’ve gone up a lot. > They are damned > nice but they have the disadvantage of being worse for the wear after being > tramelled by a Landcruiser.

Most things do :-) Daniel — Daniel Bowen, Melbourne, Australia Visiting Australia FAQ http://www.custard.net.au/australia/

I’m still mighty pissed off at losing a hat that had just become beat up enough to actually WEAR in Australia…

There is a shop in Covent Garden that sells these hats, and you can also order from them online at http://www.australiashop.co.uk/ — Posted via http://britishexpats.com

You can forget about these if you want the proper Aussie look buy a proper Akubra,  When you purchase one similar to the "Bobby " style, these have a higher crown and will stay on in almost any weather without the chin strap. the more shallower crowned versions blow off in the slightest breeze, or at anything more than a trot if you intend to ride a horse.  The "Bronco" is another good style to purchase, but don’t get a "Cattleman" these blow off very easily. Regards Gordon. PS the going price last week in Perth was $120.00 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Mooroombah, aussie for hat. > Australian Bush Hat Co.Floppy HC stays on your head in hurricanes and folds up. > www.ca.com.au/bushat/Mooroombah_hats.html > Bob > www.bobmckay.co.uk/Frame2.html
