Dining Canopy

Question:

I have an 11 x 11 tent and would like a nice canopy to use to sit under when it’s raining or to keep out from under the hot sun when I camp at places without many trees. Any suggestions on a quality canopy at a decent price? Thanks

Response:

Goto Home Depot,  they have all sizes of tarps, but you got to love blue.  I have a couple I use in the winter, during hunting season when I’m in the boonies.  I use one attached to my awning of my trailer to act as a wind break, and I use one as a tent for my generator. I found a solution for tent poles for the do itselfer.  I use 3/4" copper pipe, with connectors.  I have some 2′, 4′, 6′ in length, and can mix and match.  I have not had any fail, but haven’t be in overly high winds. Might help you all to find reasonably priced poles.  I used reducer and smaller pipe at the tops to got through the grommets. Buck

E-Z Ups come in a lot of price variations and sturdiness.  Google it. It may be some variation on that name, like E-Zee Up, too. — rbc:  vixen    Fairly harmless remove invalid or hit reply to email. Though I’m very slow to respond. http://www.visi.com/~cyli

I have one of the smaller E-Z Ups. I think it’s about 8×8 feet. Use it mostly for shade in the desert. Works good and it is easy to set up. -Florian  http://www.stargazer.org/

Actually, my local Home Depot, and several hardware stores as well, are now carrying brown and green tarps. These are gentler on the eyes, and take the UV better, too. I DO love blue, my favorite color,  but not in the shade of blue the blue tarps come in, and that shade is quicker to fail in the sun, at least for prolonged periods. Try the brown. Also, several manufacturers make dining canopies which  erect much like modern tents do. I have one from LL Bean, but I think you can purchase a dining canopy with poles almost anywhere. (Walmart, Ames, Sears, etc) The LLBean one sets up easily with the pop out poles. Another one I have is almost impossible to set up, as the wind will come along at just the wrong moment and foil one’s attempts to set it up, unless one has a lot of attentive helpers right there. I would go for the ease—no need for irritation at the start of a camping trip.

Years ago, a friend had a set-up to use over a camp fire.  It was designed with PVC pipe I think, that took about four ppl to set up; and a suspended tarp in between the posts. This one was large enough to accomodate 10 or 12 ppl around the campfire during a rainstorm. In about two or three years depending on frequency of use, the tarp would be wasted because of sparks but easily replaced.  This saved many a rainy weekend.  If anyone has ideas or plans for this I would like to hear about them.

When going with groups especially, having a central covered area to gather in makes a big difference, especially when the weather is bad. If everyone is huddled in their separate tents, there is no good way to have any group cohesiveness and make any alternate plans. Cooking is also easier without pine needles and other parts of nature dropping into your cooking area (damn birds!). Save yourself some trouble, and avoid ones with just 4 poles at the corners. It takes a good deal of skill to set these up, and a gust of wind or a klutz, will knock it over. Go for something with a full frame. Also, throw away the wire tent stakes that come with most of them, and buy some real ones. Even a 40d nail will work well. If you are camping where there is any degree of wind I would stay away from anything that is around 20 dollars. I got one at http://www.sportsmansguide.com/ that has survived rough conditions for over two years there, prices seem pretty reasonable. You could also try contacting a tent rental place to see if they sell any used tents. -s

I have one of the 4 pole type I have used for 10 years. Replace the pegs and wind isn’t a big problem, however it still takes 10 men and a son of a bitch to put it up.
