Question:

my trip to germany and slovenia is fast approaching! i found a great suitcase on wheels with a matching wheeled carryon that can attach to the suitcase when i need to transport both. but then i discovered that the airline i’m taking only allows carryons 22×16x8. this one is more like 18×14x10, so i had to take it back. now i can’t find anything 8" deep on wheels. has anyone found anything like that? i simply can’t lug around a carryon with these hands. second question, what is the best way to make phone calls from europe (germany and slovenia) to the US? thanks, group, diane

Response:

Diane, we’ve taken 2 trips with the Rick Steves/Npr groups.  Rick was just here doing pledge week.  He mentioned specifically using a pre pd cell phone in Europe to call home.  Also said ‘no more trlrs cks or using money exchange’ just use ATMs in Europe.  Try his website "Europe through the Back Door" and read up on all of this. I envy you.  Can’t do trips anymore–but we do have our memories.  Nell PS– hate to bring up what may be a painful subject, we have a handicapped dog as well.  How’s your pup?  You have’t mentioned him in a while.  And if I bring tears, I’m so sorry.

thanks for the travel info, nell. and bruin, my pup, is doing quite well! his leg and shoulder were amputated in july, and at least so far, there doesn’t seem to be a return of the cancer. the only weird thing is he is now freaking out a bit when he goes up and down the stairs. he’ll spend a good fifteen minutes at the bottom of the stairs, as if trying to get the courage to climb them. ironically, when he visits my friend’s house, he zips up and down her stairs and they are steeper and longer. my vet suggested he fell on my stairs sometime when i wasn’t around and that’s why this is happening. i’ve been moving his feet up the stairs for him to get him started, but he’s 95 pounds and that’s not doing my RA any good!  thanks for asking. what is your dog’s handicap? diane

Get yourself a calling card.  Any of the big companies have them, you may have to dial an access number first.  There are many companies to choose from you might start with MCI, ATT Sprint and see what kind of deal you can get.  – MZ Visit my website: http://www.mzuschlag.com

You might check out Eagle Creek they have a good selection of suitcases on wheels.  They have computer brief cases that might work, and one that is a day back with wheels.   http://www.eaglecreek.com/index.html Visit my website: http://www.mzuschlag.com

First, make sure to take a good tape measure with you when you go shopping. Try some of the speciality stores in some of the malls such as Travel 2000 and Rand McNally (I know that they’re a map store, but they also carry a lot of travel accessories) or a backpacking/camping store such as EMS (Eastern mountain Sports) REI (Recreational Equipment Incorporated) or Eddie Bauer. I’ve also seen a good selection in Target. If all else fails, try getting a salesman’s catalog bag. They’re not the greatest for packing clothes, but they should fit the size restrictions. Another suggestions for packing, Eagle Creek and some other companies, make some zippered "packing cubes" (not really cube shaped) that are a great help. I use one for underwear, a smaller one for socks, and a flat shirt holder for golf shirts. The shirt holder (available in three sizes) has a plastic insert to help you fold shirts to fit the carrier, and closes with velcro. When you get there, your shirts are almost unwrinkled. I also carry a trash bag to hold dirty (or already worn) clothes (after airing them out) to keep them separate from my clean ones. One thing to keep in mind with ANY wheeled bag is that the smaller the wheels the more likely to be unstable/unusable on rough or cobble-stone streets. — "One of the most striking differences between a cat  and a lie is that a cat only has nine lives."  Puddinhead Wilson’s Calendar (Mark Twain) —– mr(dot)bones(at)att(dot)net

If you belong, check with an auto club (AAA).

VERY important.  My stepdaughter bought a cheap wheeled suitcase with small wheels when she did a summer course in Italy.  Big mistake.  She lost one of the wheels early on from the bumping over cobblestones.  She had to drag it around on three wheels the rest of the trip.  It was hard for a healthy 19 year old, you don’t need to be doing that! — Nann remove the Gator cheer to email me I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells. – Dr Suess

good info, you guys! i found a case yesterday that i am hoping will work. it wasn’t cheap, so i hope the wheels stay on. the thing is, it’s the required 8 inches deep (as long as i don’t cram too much into it), but the wheels make it 9 inches at the bottom. i am just going to hope for the best. i’ve run out of shopping time. diane

It is very helpful with climate based on time of the year and how many days….  I love those suitcases that allow you to unzip and expand so what you bought during the trip has a place to reside for the trip home. Zip lock makes a huge freezer bag which I packed things in for the trip. All socks in one, underwear, shirts,….  When or if your bag gets opened, all can be searched easily because these bags are clear and repacking is easy cause nothing was really disturbed. Fill the bag, zip it nearly closed, sit on it and reach between your legs and zip it completely closed. Neat flat and ready to pack. Pack a few extras for dirty clothes and then your suitcase doesn’t take on the smell of gym socks. thanks for your suggestions, duckie. i have to say i am not nearly as distressed by the war/terrorism aspect of this trip now as i am of the new pneumonia issue. i have my remicade tomorrow, so i will be ripe for any germs that are coming down the pike, and they are saying the illness is being spread by jet travel. i’m flying into frankfurt, where the one guy was taken off the plane and hospitalized. i’m just glad i got travel insurance in case i end up having to cancel. i will be sooooo sad. diane

Response:

Diane, I have just the thing for you-Will you take thymus (doesn’t interfer with any meds) I will send it overnight tomorrow if you’ll take it.  It is what pulled Johnie out of his pneumonia last year and donna this year.  All the acupuncturists and half the docs I know take the stuff and I guarantee you will not get sick.  Also have a little device that is a p0rtable ion gererator that clips onto your collar that you wear while on the plane that destroys virus and bacteria.  Let me know if you’ll take thymus and I’ll send it tomorrow morning. Okay-don’t know how that got posted to the group.  I very very carefully took off the post to newsgroup option as I do not offer medical products within the newsgroup. Sorry- can’t figure that one out-even had to delete the no spam part of diane’s e-mail address.  That is the third or fourth time that has happened since switching to 7.0 which is why I was so deliberate and careful.  Diane did you get a private e-mail as well? The case in Frankfurt was just one case and he was quarantined as he got off the plan, so I am sure you will be okay.  Have a great trip. Its very scary though isn’t it?  There is an article on the BBC site written by a doctor who is working in the thick of it in Hong Kong and it makes frightening reading. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2851487.stm Jayne
